The use of hand carts will save workers time and help protect them from injury.
Using hand carts to move heavy loads from one area to another helps workers by decreasing the risk of injury to their backs and shoulders.
However, the maneuvering of hand carts by pushing or pulling, can still lead to overexertion. Other frequent injuries resulting from the use of hand carts include:
- Smashing fingers and hands between the cart and other objects
- Bumping or crushing toes, feet and lower legs
- Straining arms, shoulder, back muscles and joints
To reduce the incident of injury the work place must first be designed for the use intended. Secondly, the right hand cart for the job must be used.
Things to keep in mind when choosing a hand cart for a particular job include:
- The weight, size and shape of the load
- How often the cart will be used
- How far the cart will be pushed or pulled
- The width of the aisle width and the type of flooring
- What kind of wheels or casters are used.
